It supports charitable activities serving the Puerto Rican communities in the metropolitan areas of Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia; and supports assistance programs in Puerto Rico, including solutions for self-sustainability of communities at risk in Puerto Rico. CPRI is a not-for-profit corporation organized under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and registered to do business in Puerto Rico as a foreign corporation. The original Círculo de Puerto Rico, Inc. was founded in 1957 in Washington, DC. Since its inception the members of the Círculo de Puerto Rico have conducted numerous cultural activities to raise funds for charitable and educational purposes. As the Washington DC metropolitan areas evolved, so did the Círculo de Puerto Rico. In 2017, the Board of Directors decided to move the headquarters from Washington, DC to Northern Virginia, and incorporated the organization as a Virginia not-for-profit corporation. An interim Board of Directors was appointed to re-organized and lead the organization until December 2018. In the re-organization process the Círculo de Puerto Rico obtained a new Federal Tax Identification and was recognized as tax-exempt organization under IRC Section 501 (c) (3).
